How do I choose my signature scent?

What is a Signature Scent?
A signature scent is your personal fragrance. The scent that people associate with you. The fragrance that belongs to you like your style or your voice. Finding it takes time. But it's worth it.
Step 1: Know Your Fragrance Family
Fragrances can be divided into families. Each family has its own character. Find out which one suits you:
- Fresh – Citrus, sea air, green notes. Light, lively, energetic.
- Floral – Rose, jasmine, peony. Romantic, feminine, timeless.
- Woody – Sandalwood, cedarwood, vetiver. Warm, grounded, masculine.
- Oriental – Oud, amber, vanilla. Intense, sensual, mysterious.
- Aromatic – Lavender, herbs, spices. Both fresh and spicy.
Think about what scents have attracted you in the past. This will give you an initial hint.
Step 2: Consider Your Lifestyle
Your signature scent should fit your everyday life. Ask yourself these questions:
- Do you wear it daily at the office or more for evenings out?
- Do you prefer subtle or intense fragrances?
- Do you like long-lasting scents or lighter ones?
- What season do you mainly wear it in?
An intense oud fragrance might not be ideal for a summer meeting. A light citrus scent might be too fleeting in winter.
Step 3: Test on Skin
Perfume smells different on the skin than on a paper strip. This is due to your personal chemistry, your pH level, and your skin's oiliness. What smells wonderful on someone else can have a completely different effect on your skin.
Therefore: Always test on the skin. On your wrist or in the crook of your elbow. And then wait. A fragrance develops in three phases:
- Top note – The first few minutes. Fresh and fleeting.
- Heart note – After 15 to 30 minutes. The true character of the fragrance.
- Base note – After an hour. What remains and how it smells on your skin.
Step 4: Use Samples for Testing
Niche fragrances are an investment. Buying a full size without truly knowing the scent is risky. This is where samples come in.
At DFP, we offer samples in 2ml, 5ml, and 10ml. This allows you to test a fragrance over several days and in various situations. Mornings, evenings, in the office, during sports. Only then will you truly know if it suits you.
Step 5: Trust Your Gut
In the end, there are no rules. Your signature scent must please you. It must feel right. You must want to wear it.
Don't be guided by trends. A fragrance that is currently popular doesn't have to be yours. Your signature scent is personal. Unique. Yours.
